Family Ties to West Bend History

Isadora (Pick) Mayer's uncle was Carl Von Marr, whose painting won him a seat in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in both Berlin and Munich. The Museum of Wisconsin Art, here in West Bend was built with the intention of providing a hoe for several of Carl's master works. He won countless gold medals in exhibitions all over the world and was knighted in Bavaria and Italy.

His works can be viewed in many museums including the Metropolitan Museum in New York. "What a proud day it was when the Flagellants won first prize at the World's Fair in St. Louis (1904) and came into the possession of the Museum of Wisconsin Art in 1975" (Spirit of West Bend, 1980). This 14x24 foot painting proudly occupies an entire wall at the gallery and is its most prized possession.

The Art Museum is a must see while staying here.
